Meat Price in Australia (FOB) - 2022

In 2022, the average meat export price amounted to $7,364 per ton, increasing by 6.1% against the previous year. Overall, export price indicated a pronounced increase from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +4.5% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, meat export price increased by +50.8% against 2016 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when the average export price increased by 18% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the average export prices reached the maximum in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major external markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the United Arab Emirates ($9,997 per ton), while the average price for exports to Papua New Guinea ($3,144 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to China (+7.1%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Meat Price in Australia (CIF) - 2022

The average meat import price stood at $3,261 per ton in 2022, reducing by -12.5% against the previous year. Overall, the import price saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 an increase of 17% against the previous year. Over the period under review, average import prices hit record highs at $3,729 per ton in 2021, and then reduced in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was New Zealand ($5,817 per ton), while the price for Canada ($2,768 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the United States (+1.5%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced mixed trend patterns.

Meat Exports in Australia

In 2022, approx. 1.4M tons of meat were exported from Australia; with a decrease of -1.7% on the previous year's figure. In general, exports recorded a deep slump.

In value terms, meat exports rose modestly to $10.6B in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 8.9% against the previous year. The exports peaked in 2022 and are likely to see gradual growth in the immediate term.
