Chili and Pepper Price in the United States (CIF) - 2023
The average chili and pepper import price stood at $1,480 per ton in August 2023, reducing by -5.2% against the previous month. Over the period under review, the import price, however, enjoyed a buoyant increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in November 2022 when the average import price increased by 36% month-to-month. Over the period under review, average import prices hit record highs at $1,801 per ton in March 2023; however, from April 2023 to August 2023, import prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In August 2023, the country with the highest price was Mexico ($2,242 per ton), while the price for Canada ($720 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From August 2022 to August 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Mexico (+9.6%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced mixed trend patterns.

The average chili and pepper export price stood at $2,403 per ton in August 2023, increasing by 20% against the previous month. Over the period under review, the export price saw a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, the average export prices attained the peak figure at $2,607 per ton in December 2022; however, from January 2023 to August 2023, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major external markets. In August 2023, the country with the highest price was Bahamas ($2,477 per ton), while the average price for exports to Mexico ($1,491 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From August 2022 to August 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Mexico (+0.6%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.
Chili and Pepper Imports in the United States
After three years of growth, overseas purchases of chilies and peppers (green) decreased by -23.7% to 1M tons in 2022. In general, imports recorded a pronounced reduction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 with an increase of 12%. As a result, imports reached the peak of 1.3M tons, and then contracted sharply in the following year.
In value terms, chili and pepper imports shrank notably to $1.3B in 2022. Over the period under review, imports showed a abrupt slump. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when imports increased by 8.1%. As a result, imports attained the peak of $1.9B, and then reduced markedly in the following year.

Overall, exports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when exports increased by 11% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of 133K tons, and then declined in the following year.
In value terms, chili and pepper exports fell modestly to $277M in 2022.
