Wheat Price in the United States (FOB) - 2023
In September 2023, the average wheat export price amounted to $315 per ton, therefore, remained relatively stable against the previous month. In general, the export price recorded a mild downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in October 2022 an increase of 12% month-to-month. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $426 per ton. From November 2022 to September 2023, the the average export prices failed to regain momentum.
Average prices varied somewhat for the major external markets. In September 2023, the countries with the highest prices were Italy ($395 per ton) and South Korea ($353 per ton), while the average price for exports to Indonesia ($265 per ton) and Chile ($270 per ton) were amongst the lowest.
From September 2022 to September 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Iraq (+5.6%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced mixed trend patterns.
Wheat Price in the United States (CIF) - 2023
The average wheat import price stood at $312 per ton in September 2023, increasing by 5.4% against the previous month. Overall, the import price saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in October 2022 when the average import price increased by 40% against the previous month. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $419 per ton. From November 2022 to September 2023, the average import prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.
Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major supplying countries. In September 2023, the country with the highest price was Germany ($319 per ton), while the price for Poland ($261 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From September 2022 to September 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Canada (+0.5%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced a decline.
Wheat Exports in the United States
For the third consecutive year, the United States recorded decline in shipments abroad of wheat, which decreased by -14% to 21M tons in 2022. Overall, exports continue to indicate a deep contraction. The smallest decline of -3.2% was in 2020.
In value terms, wheat exports soared to $8.4B in 2022. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +10.1% over the period from 2019 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 15%. The exports peaked in 2022 and are likely to see gradual growth in the immediate term.
