Buckwheat Price in the UK (CIF) - 2023
In May 2023, the average buckwheat import price amounted to $1,924 per ton, surging by 8.7% against the previous month. Over the period under review, import price indicated mild growth from May 2022 to May 2023: its price increased at an average monthly rate of +1.8% over the last twelve-month period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on May 2023 figures, buckwheat import price increased by +45.3% against January 2023 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in February 2023 when the average import price increased by 76% m-o-m. The import price peaked at $2,349 per ton in December 2022; however, from January 2023 to May 2023, import prices failed to regain momentum.
Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major supplying countries. In May 2023, the highest price was recorded for prices from New Zealand ($2,184 per ton) and Austria ($2,048 per ton), while the price for Hungary ($1,703 per ton) and Germany ($2,006 per ton) were amongst the lowest.
From May 2022 to May 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Hungary (+5.0%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average buckwheat export price stood at $4,445 per ton in 2022, increasing by 88% against the previous year. Overall, the export price continues to indicate a notable increase. As a result, the export price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major external markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Sweden ($13,931 per ton), while the average price for exports to Germany ($1,458 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Sweden (+10.1%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
Buckwheat Imports in the UK
In 2022, overseas purchases of buckwheat decreased by -28.5% to 1.2K tons, falling for the second consecutive year after two years of growth. Over the period under review, imports recorded a abrupt downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 34%. As a result, imports attained the peak of 2.1K tons. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.
