Sweet Potato Production in Brazil - 2022
In 2022, production of sweet potatoes decreased by -0.1% to 847K tons, falling for the second year in a row after two years of growth. The total output volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.7% over the period from 2017 to 2022; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 8.5%. Over the period under review, production hit record highs at 849K tons in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, production failed to regain momentum. Sweet potato output in Brazil indicated a mild expansion, which was largely conditioned by a mild increase of the harvested area and a relatively flat trend pattern in yield figures.
In value terms, sweet potato production totaled $437M in 2022 estimated in export price. Overall, production showed a noticeable downturn. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 with an increase of 45% against the previous year. Sweet potato production peaked at $539M in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2022, approx. 58K ha of sweet potatoes were harvested in Brazil; remaining stable against the previous year's figure. The harvested area increased at an average annual rate of +1.5% from 2017 to 2022; the trend pattern remained consistent, with only minor fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 8.3%. The sweet potato harvested area peaked at 60K ha in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the harvested area stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Sweet Potato Yield in Brazil - 2022
In 2022, the average sweet potato yield in Brazil contracted slightly to 15 tons per ha, remaining relatively unchanged against 2021. In general, the yield, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 2.9%. As a result, the yield reached the peak level of 15 tons per ha, leveling off in the following year.
