Beef Price in Italy (CIF) - 2023
In June 2023, the average beef import price amounted to $7,318 per ton, waning by -5.3% against the previous month. Over the period under review, the import price saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in April 2023 an increase of 8.8% m-o-m. Over the period under review, average import prices attained the peak figure at $7,726 per ton in May 2023, and then shrank in the following month.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In June 2023, the country with the highest price was Ireland ($11,146 per ton), while the price for Germany ($6,220 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From June 2022 to June 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Belgium (+0.9%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
Beef Price in Italy (FOB) - 2023
In June 2023, the average beef export price amounted to $6,557 per ton, reducing by -8.6% against the previous month. In general, the export price, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in December 2022 when the average export price increased by 8.8% month-to-month. Over the period under review, the average export prices reached the maximum at $7,266 per ton in April 2023; however, from May 2023 to June 2023, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably by the country of destination: the country with the highest price was Germany ($9,085 per ton), while the average price for exports to Poland ($2,803 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From June 2022 to June 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Germany (+2.7%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
Beef Imports in Italy
In 2022, after two years of decline, there was growth in overseas purchases of beef (cattle meat), when their volume increased by 2.1% to 353K tons. Overall, imports, however, continue to indicate a pronounced downturn.
In value terms, beef imports expanded notably to $2.5B in 2022. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +4.7% over the period from 2019 to 2022; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 13%. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum in 2022 and are likely to see gradual growth in years to come.

Beef Exports in Italy
Beef exports from Italy dropped to 123K tons in 2022, declining by -6.5% compared with the previous year. The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.4% over the period from 2019 to 2022; the trend pattern remained consistent, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being observed throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when exports increased by 17% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of 131K tons, and then reduced in the following year.
In value terms, beef exports rose rapidly to $759M in 2022. Over the period under review, total exports indicated a remarkable increase from 2019 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +10.1% over the last three-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +50.4% against 2020 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when exports increased by 36%. The exports peaked in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.
