Weekly Sugar Intake

Weekly sugar intake refers to the amount of sugar consumed from all food and drink sources during a one-week period. Sugar is a type of carbohydrate that provides the body with energy. However, consuming too much sugar can lead to various health problems, such as obesity, diabetes, and tooth decay. Therefore, it is important to monitor and control the amount of sugar we consume on a weekly basis.

The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends that sugar intake should be limited to less than 10% of total energy intake per day. For an average adult with an energy requirement of 2000 calories per day, this translates to a maximum of 50 grams or 12 teaspoons of sugar per day. However, for additional health benefits, WHO further advises a reduction to less than 5% of total energy intake per day, which is equivalent to 25 grams or 6 teaspoons of sugar per day. These recommendations apply to both added sugars (such as those found in processed foods and beverages) and naturally occurring sugars (such as those in fruits and vegetables).

To calculate weekly sugar intake, we need to multiply the maximum daily intake of sugar by 7. Following the WHO guidelines, the weekly sugar intake should not exceed 350 grams or 84 teaspoons (10% of energy intake) and ideally should be below 175 grams or 42 teaspoons (5% of energy intake) for an average adult with a 2000-calorie diet.

It is essential to consider that sugar is present in various forms and can be disguised under different names on food labels. Some common names for added sugars include sucrose, glucose, fructose, maltose, and corn syrup. Reading nutrition labels and ingredient lists can help in identifying sources of added sugars in packaged foods and drinks.

Reducing sugar intake can be challenging but can be achieved by making simple changes in our diet. Limiting the consumption of sugary beverages like soda, energy drinks, and juices can significantly reduce sugar intake. Choosing whole fruits instead of fruit juices and opting for unsweetened foods and snacks can also help in reducing sugar consumption. Replacing sugary snacks with healthier alternatives like nuts, seeds, or low-sugar yogurt can be another way to cut down on sugar intake.

Monitoring and controlling weekly sugar intake is crucial for maintaining a healthy diet and overall well-being. By being aware of the recommended sugar limits and making conscious food choices, we can minimize the risk of health problems associated with excessive sugar consumption.

Global Sugar Production to Grow Tangibly This Year, Keeping Prices Stable
Aug 13, 2021
Eye 1368

This year, world sugar production is expected to rise by 3% to 193M tons. The growth will be encouraged by favorable weather conditions in most of the largest producing countries, as well as the providing exemptions on the neonicotinoid usage against plant diseases and blights in France, Germany and the UK. The drop in sugar production and shipments from Brazil will be offset by large volumes coming from Thailand, which will boost global exports by +2.6% y-o-y. The increased supply in the world market is to keep sugar prices relatively stable over the next two years.
