Tomato Price in South Africa (FOB) - 2023
The average tomato export price stood at $421 per ton in September 2023, with an increase of 23% against the previous month. Over the period under review, export price indicated strong growth from September 2022 to September 2023: its price increased at an average monthly rate of +5.7% over the last twelve months. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on September 2023 figures, tomato export price increased by +113.6% against May 2023 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in October 2022 an increase of 60% m-o-m. The export price peaked in September 2023.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major overseas markets. In September 2023, the country with the highest price was Namibia ($824 per ton), while the average price for exports to Lesotho ($344 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From September 2022 to September 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Mozambique (+15.4%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced mixed trend patterns.

The average tomato import price stood at $568 per ton in 2022, with a decrease of -9% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, continues to indicate a strong expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 when the average import price increased by 100% against the previous year. The import price peaked at $624 per ton in 2021, and then shrank in the following year.
As there is only one major supplying country, the average price level is determined by prices for Namibia.
From 2012 to 2022, the rate of growth in terms of prices for Namibia amounted to +13.4% per year.

In 2022, overseas shipments of tomatoes were finally on the rise to reach 19K tons after two years of decline. In general, exports, however, showed a abrupt downturn.

For the fourth year in a row, South Africa recorded growth in overseas purchases of tomatoes, which increased by 74% to 13K tons in 2022. Overall, imports enjoyed a significant increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 113%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.
In value terms, tomato imports skyrocketed to $7.3M in 2022. In general, imports showed a significant increase.
