Sorghum Price in the United States (FOB) - 2023
The average sorghum export price stood at $281 per ton in September 2023, increasing by 11% against the previous month. Over the period under review, the export price, however, showed a slight downturn. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in October 2022 when the average export price increased by 18% m-o-m. The export price peaked at $421 per ton in January 2023; however, from February 2023 to September 2023, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
Average prices varied noticeably for the major foreign markets. In September 2023, the country with the highest price was Mexico ($283 per ton), while the average price for exports to China stood at $277 per ton.
From September 2022 to September 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Mexico (-0.7%).
Sorghum Price in the United States (CIF) - 2022
The average sorghum import price stood at $1,582 per ton in 2022, increasing by 52% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price showed a buoyant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 an increase of 269% against the previous year. Over the period under review, average import prices attained the peak figure in 2022 and is likely to see gradual growth in years to come.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Chile ($3,473 per ton), while the price for India ($540 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Argentina (+15.9%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
Sorghum Exports in the United States
In 2022, shipments abroad of sorghum decreased by -2.6% to 6.2M tons, falling for the second year in a row after two years of growth. Overall, exports, however, showed a significant increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 with an increase of 132% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of 6.6M tons. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, sorghum exports expanded rapidly to $2.2B in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, recorded a significant increase.
