Sorghum Production in the United States - 2022
In 2022, production of sorghum decreased by -8.4% to 10M tons for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year rising trend. The total output volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.5% from 2017 to 2022; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when the production volume increased by 20%. As a result, production reached the peak volume of 11M tons, and then contracted in the following year. Sorghum output in the United States indicated a notable increase, which was largely conditioned by a noticeable increase of the harvested area and a relatively flat trend pattern in yield figures.
In value terms, sorghum production rose modestly to $1.9B in 2022. The total output value increased at an average annual rate of +2.3% from 2017 to 2022; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when the production volume increased by 17%. As a result, production reached the peak level of $2B. From 2021 to 2022, production growth remained at a lower figure.

In 2022, the average yield of sorghum in the United States rose modestly to 4.4 tons per ha, with an increase of 2.7% on the previous year's figure. In general, the yield, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, the average sorghum yield reached the peak level at 4.6 tons per ha in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the yield remained at a lower figure.
