Price for Dried or Salted Fish in Latvia (FOB) - 2023

The average dried or salted fish export price stood at $4,486 per ton in September 2023, dropping by -10.8% against the previous month. Over the period under review, the export price recorded a pronounced reduction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in June 2023 when the average export price increased by 205% against the previous month. The export price peaked at $5,854 per ton in September 2022; however, from October 2022 to September 2023, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major external markets. In September 2023, the country with the highest price was Estonia ($13,706 per ton), while the average price for exports to Germany ($3,606 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From September 2022 to September 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Estonia (+11.2%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, the average dried or salted fish import price amounted to $4,022 per ton, falling by -20.7% against the previous year. Overall, the import price continues to indicate a perceptible contraction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 an increase of 59%. Over the period under review, average import prices hit record highs at $9,253 per ton in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Vietnam ($9,407 per ton), while the price for Poland ($1,339 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Kazakhstan (+8.4%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced mixed trend patterns.

Exports of Dried or Salted Fish in Latvia

In 2022, after three years of growth, there was significant decline in shipments abroad of dried or salted fish, when their volume decreased by -13.5% to 569 tons. Over the period under review, exports, however, recorded a significant increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 with an increase of 124%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of 658 tons, and then fell in the following year.

In value terms, dried or salted fish exports surged to $1.8M in 2022. Overall, exports, however, continue to indicate significant growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 59% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum in 2022 and are likely to see steady growth in the immediate term.
