The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 with an increase of 6.8%. Over the period under review, global production hit record highs in 2022 and is likely to see steady growth in years to come. The general positive trend in terms output was largely conditioned by a mild increase of the harvested area and a relatively flat trend pattern in yield figures.

In value terms, persimmon production totaled $8.7B in 2022 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, the total production indicated a notable increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.7% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, production decreased by -5.3% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the production volume increased by 25% against the previous year. Global production peaked at $9.2B in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, production remained at a lower figure.

Production By Country

China (3.4M tons) constituted the country with the largest volume of persimmon production, accounting for 65% of total volume. Moreover, persimmon production in China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Spain (636K tons), fivefold. The third position in this ranking was taken by South Korea (232K tons), with a 4.4% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume in China amounted to +1.6%. The remaining producing countries recorded the following average annual rates of production growth: Spain (+6.1% per year) and South Korea (-5.3% per year).

Yield

In 2022, the global average persimmon yield stood at 4.9 tons per ha, standing approx. at the previous year. In general, the yield, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when the yield increased by 4.1% against the previous year. The global yield peaked at 4.9 tons per ha in 2012; afterwards, it flattened through to 2022.

Harvested Area

In 2022, the total area harvested in terms of persimmons production worldwide was estimated at 1.1M ha, therefore, remained relatively stable against the previous year's figure. The harvested area increased at an average annual rate of +1.5% over the period from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained consistent, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. World Imports of Persimmon

In 2022, overseas purchases of persimmons decreased by -12% to 507K tons, falling for the second year in a row after two years of growth. In general, total imports indicated a remarkable increase from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +6.3% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports decreased by -21.0% against 2020 indices. In value terms, persimmon imports declined to $553M in 2022. Overall, total imports indicated a remarkable increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.9% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports decreased by -20.4% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 37% against the previous year. Over the period under review, global imports reached the peak figure at $695M in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports By Country

Russia was the largest importer of persimmons in the world, with the volume of imports recording 190K tons, which was approx. 37% of total imports in 2022. Vietnam (67K tons) held a 13% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Kazakhstan (6.7%) and Germany (6.3%). Ukraine (21K tons), Italy (21K tons), France (17K tons), Thailand (16K tons) and Belarus (7.8K tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Imports into Russia increased at an average annual rate of +4.5% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Vietnam (+17.1%), Thailand (+13.7%), Italy (+10.2%), Germany (+6.1%), Ukraine (+3.2%), Kazakhstan (+2.9%) and France (+1.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Vietnam emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in the world, with a CAGR of +17.1% from 2012-2022. Belarus experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. While the share of Vietnam (+8.3 p.p.), Ukraine (+4.2 p.p.) and Thailand (+1.6 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the global imports from 2012-2022, the share of Belarus (-1.6 p.p.), France (-1.8 p.p.), Kazakhstan (-2.6 p.p.) and Russia (-7 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Russia ($151M) constitutes the largest market for imported persimmons worldwide, comprising 27% of global imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Vietnam ($67M), with a 12% share of global imports. It was followed by Germany, with a 10% share.

In Russia, persimmon imports increased at an average annual rate of +2.6% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Vietnam (+21.1% per year) and Germany (+8.0% per year).

Import Prices By Country

The average persimmon import price stood at $1,090 per ton in 2022, falling by -3.4% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 an increase of 9%. Over the period under review, average import prices hit record highs at $1,222 per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Germany ($1,807 per ton), while Kazakhstan ($514 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Vietnam (+3.4%), while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Exports

World Exports of Persimmon

In 2022, overseas shipments of persimmons decreased by -5.2% to 514K tons, falling for the second consecutive year after two years of growth. In general, exports, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when exports increased by 30% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the global exports hit record highs at 652K tons in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, persimmon exports reduced to $541M in 2022. Over the period under review, exports showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when exports increased by 25%. Over the period under review, the global exports hit record highs at $714M in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports By Country

The shipments of the four major exporters of persimmons, namely Azerbaijan, Spain, China and Uzbekistan, represented more than two-thirds of total export. Georgia (8.2K tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for China (with a CAGR of +14.9%), while shipments for the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Spain ($173M), Azerbaijan ($113M) and China ($96M) were the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2022, together accounting for 71% of global exports.

China, with a CAGR of +17.7%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, in terms of the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices By Country

In 2022, the average persimmon export price amounted to $1,052 per ton, shrinking by -6.1% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price showed a slight curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when the average export price increased by 6.9% against the previous year. The global export price peaked at $1,241 per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Spain ($1,441 per ton), while Uzbekistan ($609 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by China (+2.5%), while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
