Molluscs Price in New Zealand (FOB) - 2023

In September 2023, the average molluscs export price amounted to $7,105 per ton, rising by 5.4% against the previous month. Over the period from September 2022 to September 2023, it increased at an average monthly rate of +2.4%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in June 2023 when the average export price increased by 14% against the previous month. Over the period under review, the average export prices reached the maximum in September 2023.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major export markets. In September 2023, the country with the highest price was the Netherlands ($7,583 per ton), while the average price for exports to Greece ($4,285 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From September 2022 to September 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to China (+5.8%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Molluscs Price in New Zealand (CIF) - 2023

The average molluscs import price stood at $6,095 per ton in September 2023, falling by -9.5% against the previous month. Overall, the import price saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in October 2022 when the average import price increased by 75% against the previous month. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $10,972 per ton. From November 2022 to September 2023, the average import prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by the country of origin: the country with the highest price was Japan ($25,197 per ton), while the price for China ($4,822 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From September 2022 to September 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Japan (+0.5%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced mixed trend patterns.

Molluscs Exports in New Zealand

In 2022, approx. 53K tons of molluscs (scallops, mussels, cuttle fish, squid and octopus) were exported from New Zealand; which is down by -9.1% compared with the previous year. Overall, exports continue to indicate a deep setback. The smallest decline of -8.1% was in 2020.

In value terms, molluscs exports dropped to $252M in 2022. Over the period under review, exports saw a deep reduction.

In 2022, molluscs imports into New Zealand contracted markedly to 1.9K tons, dropping by -15.3% compared with 2021 figures. Overall, imports saw a drastic downturn. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 16% against the previous year.

In value terms, molluscs imports expanded significantly to $14M in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
