Melon Price in Italy (FOB) - 2023
The average melon export price stood at $1,042 per ton in August 2023, reducing by -26.3% against the previous month. In general, the export price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in November 2022 an increase of 62% against the previous month. The export price peaked at $2,215 per ton in April 2023; however, from May 2023 to August 2023, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major overseas markets. In August 2023, the country with the highest price was Switzerland ($1,861 per ton), while the average price for exports to France ($733 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From August 2022 to August 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Denmark (+1.7%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
Melon Price in Italy (CIF) - 2023
In July 2023, the average melon import price amounted to $1,095 per ton, growing by 11% against the previous month. Over the period under review, the import price showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in April 2023 an increase of 26% against the previous month. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $1,745 per ton. From May 2023 to July 2023, the average import prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by the country of origin: the country with the highest price was France ($1,444 per ton), while the price for Albania ($600 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From July 2022 to July 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Tunisia (+8.2%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
Melon Exports in Italy
In 2022, the amount of melons exported from Italy expanded significantly to 39K tons, picking up by 8% compared with 2021 figures. Over the period under review, total exports indicated a resilient expansion from 2019 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +14.6% over the last three years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +50.4% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when exports increased by 27% against the previous year. The exports peaked in 2022 and are likely to see gradual growth in the near future.
In value terms, melon exports surged to $43M in 2022. Overall, total exports indicated a buoyant expansion from 2019 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +18.3% over the last three-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +65.5% against 2019 indices. As a result, the exports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Melon Imports in Italy
For the third year in a row, Italy recorded decline in overseas purchases of melons, which decreased by -3.9% to 27K tons in 2022. Over the period under review, imports faced a deep downturn. The smallest decline of -0.4% was in 2021.
In value terms, melon imports amounted to $32M in 2022. Overall, imports recorded a noticeable descent. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 13% against the previous year.
