High sugar intake refers to the consumption of excessive amounts of sugar on a regular basis. While our body needs some sugar for energy, consuming too much of it can have detrimental effects on our health. Sugar is a type of carbohydrate that is found naturally in many foods, such as fruits, vegetables, and milk. However, it is also added to many processed foods and beverages, leading to a significant increase in sugar intake.
When we consume high amounts of sugar, our body metabolizes it into glucose, which enters our bloodstream and provides energy to our cells. However, when we consume more sugar than our body needs, the excess glucose is stored as glycogen in the liver and muscles. If our glycogen stores are already full, the excess glucose is converted into fat and stored in adipose tissue, leading to weight gain and an increased risk of obesity.
High sugar intake has been linked to numerous negative health outcomes. One of the most well-known impacts is an increased risk of developing type 2 diabetes. When we consume a lot of sugar, it can lead to insulin resistance, whereby our cells become less responsive to insulin, a hormone that regulates blood sugar levels. Insulin resistance can eventually progress to type 2 diabetes, a chronic condition characterized by high blood sugar levels.
Excessive sugar consumption has also been associated with an increased risk of heart disease. A high intake of sugar, especially added sugars, can lead to obesity, high blood pressure, and increased levels of triglycerides (a type of fat) in the blood. These factors contribute to the development of heart disease, one of the leading causes of death worldwide.
Another consequence of high sugar intake is an increased risk of tooth decay. Bacteria in the mouth love sugar, and when we consume sugary foods and drinks, they feed on the sugars and produce acids that attack the tooth enamel. Over time, this can lead to cavities and dental problems. It is particularly important to limit sugar intake in children, as tooth decay can have long-lasting effects on their oral health.
In addition to these specific health risks, high sugar intake has been linked to inflammation, reduced cognitive function, and an increased risk of certain types of cancer. Chronic inflammation has been associated with a variety of health conditions, including obesity, diabetes, and cardiovascular disease. The consumption of high amounts of sugar can contribute to inflammation in the body, leading to a higher risk of these conditions.
Furthermore, a diet high in sugar has been shown to have negative effects on cognitive function. Studies have found that excessive sugar intake can impair memory and lead to cognitive decline, potentially increasing the risk of conditions such as dementia and Alzheimer's disease.
Finally, some research suggests that a high sugar intake may be associated with an increased risk of certain types of cancer, including pancreatic cancer, breast cancer, and colorectal cancer. However, more research is needed to fully understand the relationship between sugar consumption and cancer development.
Overall, consuming excessive amounts of sugar on a regular basis can have serious health consequences. It is important to be mindful of our sugar intake and make conscious choices to limit our consumption of sugary foods and beverages. Opting for whole foods, such as fruits and vegetables, and reducing our intake of processed foods can help us maintain a balanced diet and promote good health.

This year, world sugar production is expected to rise by 3% to 193M tons. The growth will be encouraged by favorable weather conditions in most of the largest producing countries, as well as the providing exemptions on the neonicotinoid usage against plant diseases and blights in France, Germany and the UK. The drop in sugar production and shipments from Brazil will be offset by large volumes coming from Thailand, which will boost global exports by +2.6% y-o-y. The increased supply in the world market is to keep sugar prices relatively stable over the next two years.
