Bacon and Ham Price in the United States (CIF) - 2023

In August 2023, the average bacon and ham import price amounted to $9,792 per ton, picking up by 1.9% against the previous month. Over the period under review, the import price, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in July 2023 an increase of 6.4% against the previous month. The import price peaked at $9,840 per ton in August 2022; afterwards, it flattened through to August 2023.

Prices varied noticeably by the country of origin: the country with the highest price was Spain ($15,661 per ton), while the price for Mexico ($4,797 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From August 2022 to August 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Spain (+2.1%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced mixed trend patterns.

Bacon and Ham Price in the United States (FOB) - 2023

In August 2023, the average bacon and ham export price amounted to $4,835 per ton, surging by 6.6% against the previous month. Over the last twelve months, it increased at an average monthly rate of +1.2%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in September 2022 an increase of 14% against the previous month. Over the period under review, the average export prices attained the peak figure at $5,125 per ton in March 2023; however, from April 2023 to August 2023, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major export markets. In August 2023, the country with the highest price was Canada ($5,744 per ton), while the average price for exports to Panama ($2,941 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From August 2022 to August 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Colombia (+4.7%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Bacon and Ham Imports in the United States

After three years of growth, supplies from abroad of bacon, ham and other dried, salted or smoked pig meat decreased by -1.6% to 42K tons in 2022. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +11.2% over the period from 2019 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when imports increased by 24% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of 42K tons, and then fell modestly in the following year.

In value terms, bacon and ham imports amounted to $374M in 2022. In general, total imports indicated a prominent increase from 2019 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +18.4% over the last three years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +66.1% against 2019 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 37% against the previous year. Imports peaked in 2022 and are likely to see steady growth in the immediate term.

Bacon and Ham Exports in the United States

In 2022, approx. 55K tons of bacon, ham and other dried, salted or smoked pig meat were exported from the United States; shrinking by -15.2% compared with the year before. Overall, exports continue to indicate a pronounced decline. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 with an increase of 9%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of 65K tons, and then declined markedly in the following year.

In value terms, bacon and ham exports fell to $246M in 2022. Over the period under review, exports recorded a perceptible decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 12% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $264M, and then fell in the following year.
