For the fourth consecutive year, South-Eastern Asia recorded decline in overseas shipments of slaked lime, which decreased by -6.8% to X tons in 2021. Over the period under review, exports continue to indicate a deep slump. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when exports increased by 22% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, slaked lime exports declined slightly to $X in 2021. In general, exports saw a noticeable contraction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when exports increased by 22% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

In 2021, Malaysia (X tons) was the major exporter of slaked lime, constituting 63% of total exports. Thailand (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 19% share, followed by Indonesia (15%). Vietnam (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Exports from Malaysia decreased at an average annual rate of -9.3% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Vietnam (+74.5%), Indonesia (+18.3%) and Thailand (+2.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Vietnam emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in South-Eastern Asia, with a CAGR of +74.5% from 2012-2021. Indonesia (+13 p.p.), Thailand (+10 p.p.) and Vietnam (+2.9 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Malaysia saw its share reduced by -26.3% from 2012 to 2021, respectively.

In value terms, Malaysia ($X) remains the largest slaked lime supplier in South-Eastern Asia, comprising 67% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Indonesia ($X), with a 14% share of total exports. It was followed by Thailand, with a 14% share.

In Malaysia, slaked lime exports plunged by an average annual rate of -6.5% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Indonesia (+18.4% per year) and Thailand (+0.6% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in South-Eastern Asia amounted to $X per ton, rising by 7.3% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2021, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.1%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when the export price increased by 9.6%. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the maximum in 2021 and is likely to continue growth in years to come.

Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, major exporting countries recorded the following prices: in Vietnam ($X per ton) and Malaysia ($X per ton), while Thailand ($X per ton) and Indonesia ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Malaysia (+3.1%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in South-Eastern Asia

In 2021, slaked lime imports in South-Eastern Asia skyrocketed to X tons, growing by 32% compared with 2020 figures. Over the period under review, imports, however, continue to indicate a mild setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when imports increased by 52% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, slaked lime imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Overall, imports, however, showed a mild slump. The level of import peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

The Philippines represented the main importing country with an import of about X tons, which amounted to 56% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Singapore (X tons), creating a 36% share of total imports. The following importers - Lao People's Democratic Republic (X tons) and Cambodia (X tons) - together made up 5% of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Cambodia (with a CAGR of +65.3%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the imports figures.

In value terms, the largest slaked lime importing markets in South-Eastern Asia were the Philippines ($X), Singapore ($X) and Lao People's Democratic Republic ($X), with a combined 94% share of total imports. Cambodia lagged somewhat behind, accounting for a further 1.2%.

Cambodia, with a CAGR of +57.1%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the imports figures.

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in South-Eastern Asia amounted to $X per ton, increasing by 15% against the previous year. In general, the import price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. As a result, import price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Singapore ($X per ton), while Lao People's Democratic Republic ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
