Madagascar (X tons) remains the largest raw silk producing country in SADC, comprising approx. X% of total volume. Moreover, raw silk production in Madagascar exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Tanzania (X tons), fivefold. Mauritius (X kg) ranked third in terms of total production with a X% share.
In Madagascar, raw silk production shrank by an average annual rate of X% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Tanzania (X% per year) and Mauritius (X% per year).

Exports in SADC
In 2022, the amount of raw silk exported in SADC dropped significantly to X kg, waning by X% against 2021 figures. In general, exports saw a sharp decrease. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 when exports increased by X% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at X kg in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, raw silk exports declined significantly to $X in 2022. Overall, exports faced a dramatic decrease. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when exports increased by X%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Exports by Country
The shipments of the one major exporters of raw silk, namely South Africa, represented more than two-thirds of total export.
South Africa was also the fastest-growing in terms of the raw silk exports, with a CAGR of X% from 2012 to 2022. The shares of the largest exporters remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, South Africa ($X) also remains the largest raw silk supplier in SADC.

Imports in SADC
In 2022, supplies from abroad of raw silk was finally on the rise to reach X kg after two years of decline. In general, imports, however, faced a deep reduction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 when imports increased by X%. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2020 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, raw silk imports dropped markedly to $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, recorded a precipitous setback. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of X%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.
Imports by Country
Mozambique was the largest importing country with an import of around X kg, which accounted for X% of total imports. Swaziland (X kg) held the second position in the ranking, followed by Angola (X kg), Zimbabwe (X kg) and Lesotho (X kg). All these countries together held near X% share of total imports. Botswana (X kg) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to raw silk imports into Mozambique stood at X%. At the same time, Botswana (X%) and Swaziland (X%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Botswana emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in SADC, with a CAGR of X% from 2012-2022. Zimbabwe experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Lesotho (X%) and Angola (X%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Mozambique, Swaziland, Zimbabwe, Botswana, Angola and Lesotho increased by X, X, X, X, X and X percentage points, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Botswana ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported raw silk in SADC, comprising X% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Zimbabwe ($X), with a X% share of total imports. It was followed by Swaziland, with a X% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Botswana amounted to X%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Zimbabwe (X% per year) and Swaziland (X% per year).

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Botswana ($X per ton), while Mozambique ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Botswana (X%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the import price figures.
