In 2021, shipments abroad of bleached sulphate pulp increased by 47% to X tons, rising for the fifth consecutive year after two years of decline. Overall, exports saw significant growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when exports increased by 115% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.

In value terms, bleached sulphate pulp exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports recorded a significant expansion. As a result, the exports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Exports by Country

Turkey represented the largest exporting country with an export of around X tons, which reached 72% of total exports. It was distantly followed by the United Arab Emirates (X tons), making up a 24% share of total exports. Oman (X tons) took a minor share of total exports.

Exports from Turkey increased at an average annual rate of +61.9% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Oman (+84.4%) and the United Arab Emirates (+6.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Oman emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in the Middle East, with a CAGR of +84.4% from 2012-2021. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Turkey and Oman increased by +66 and +2.2 percentage points, respectively.

In value terms, Turkey ($X) remains the largest bleached sulphate pulp supplier in the Middle East, comprising 76% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by the United Arab Emirates ($X), with a 21% share of total exports.

In Turkey, bleached sulphate pulp exports increased at an average annual rate of +60.1% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: the United Arab Emirates (+3.7% per year) and Oman (+73.3% per year).

For the fourth consecutive year, the Middle East recorded growth in overseas purchases of bleached sulphate pulp, which increased by 10% to X tons in 2021. Total imports indicated a prominent increase from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +8.7% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +112.4% against 2012 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 20%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.

Imports by Country

In 2021, Turkey (X tons) represented the largest importer of bleached sulphate pulp, constituting 56% of total imports. The United Arab Emirates (X tons) held the second position in the ranking, distantly followed by Iran (X tons) and Israel (X tons). All these countries together took approx. 38% share of total imports. Jordan (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to bleached sulphate pulp imports into Turkey stood at +7.0%. At the same time, the United Arab Emirates (+26.6%), Jordan (+20.0%), Iran (+12.0%) and Israel (+1.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, the United Arab Emirates emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in the Middle East, with a CAGR of +26.6% from 2012-2021. The United Arab Emirates (+19 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Israel and Turkey saw its share reduced by -5% and -8.4% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

Over the period under review, import prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.
