Saudi Arabia was the major exporting country with an export of about X tons, which finished at 57% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Egypt (X tons) and the United Arab Emirates (X tons), together committing a 38% share of total exports. Jordan (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Egypt (with a CAGR of +24.4%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the exports figures.

In value terms, the largest uncoated felt paper supplying countries in MENA were Saudi Arabia ($X), Egypt ($X) and the United Arab Emirates ($X), with a combined 94% share of total exports.

In terms of the main exporting countries, Egypt, with a CAGR of +36.0%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The export price in MENA stood at $X per ton in 2022, reducing by -12.4% against the previous year. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. For the third year in a row, MENA recorded growth in overseas purchases of uncoated felt paper and paperboard, which increased by 40% to X tons in 2022. Overall, imports, however, saw a slight contraction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 160%. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, uncoated felt paper imports surged to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 176%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

Egypt was the largest importing country with an import of around X tons, which amounted to 39% of total imports. The United Arab Emirates (X tons) held a 16% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Bahrain (11%), Morocco (7.5%), Palestine (5.9%) and Algeria (5.8%). Yemen (X tons) held a little share of total imports.

Imports into Egypt increased at an average annual rate of +21.1% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Bahrain (+90.3%), Palestine (+76.4%), the United Arab Emirates (+29.1%), Yemen (+9.0%) and Algeria (+8.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Bahrain emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in MENA, with a CAGR of +90.3% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Morocco (-14.8%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Egypt (+34 p.p.), the United Arab Emirates (+15 p.p.), Bahrain (+11 p.p.), Palestine (+5.9 p.p.), Algeria (+3.7 p.p.) and Yemen (+2.6 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2022, the share of Morocco (-24.1 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Egypt totaled +13.5%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Palestine (+68.8% per year) and Bahrain (+73.4% per year).

The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when the import price increased by 25% against the previous year. Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Palestine ($X per ton), while the United Arab Emirates ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
