In terms of the main exporting countries, Colombia, with a CAGR of +50.3%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The export price in Latin America and the Caribbean stood at $X per ton in 2021, surging by 16% against the previous year. Overall, the export price continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 an increase of 24% against the previous year. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2019 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was El Salvador ($X per ton), while Colombia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

Total imports indicated a resilient increase from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +7.4% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +23.5% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when imports increased by 17%. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum in 2021 and are likely to continue growth in the near future.

Mexico dominates imports structure, finishing at X tons, which was approx. 52% of total imports in 2021. Guatemala (X tons) took a 9.2% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by the Dominican Republic (7%), Chile (6.8%), Colombia (5.7%) and El Salvador (4.5%). Honduras (X tons) held a relatively small share of total imports.

Imports into Mexico increased at an average annual rate of +10.1% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Chile (+24.3%), the Dominican Republic (+6.2%), Honduras (+5.8%), Guatemala (+4.9%), El Salvador (+3.8%) and Colombia (+1.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Chile emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Latin America and the Caribbean, with a CAGR of +24.3% from 2012-2021. While the share of Mexico (+11 p.p.) and Chile (+5 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2021, the share of El Salvador (-1.6 p.p.), Guatemala (-2.1 p.p.) and Colombia (-3.7 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Mexico ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported semi-chemical fluting in Latin America and the Caribbean, comprising 50% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Guatemala ($X), with a 10% share of total imports. It was followed by Chile, with a 7.2% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in Mexico amounted to +12.3%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Guatemala (+8.8% per year) and Chile (+26.3% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in Latin America and the Caribbean amounted to $X per ton, rising by 14% against the previous year. Over the last nine-year period, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.2%. As a result, import price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, major importing countries recorded the following prices: in El Salvador ($X per ton) and Guatemala ($X per ton), while the Dominican Republic ($X per ton) and Honduras ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.
