Exports in Latin America and the Caribbean

Semi-chemical fluting exports dropped to X tons in 2021, leveling off at the year before. Overall, exports, however, recorded a strong increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when exports increased by 258%. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, semi-chemical fluting exports expanded sharply to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports, however, enjoyed a buoyant increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 when exports increased by 209%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

Colombia represented the largest exporter of semi-chemical fluting in Latin America and the Caribbean, with the volume of exports resulting at X tons, which was near 45% of total exports in 2021. Brazil (X tons) held the second position in the ranking, distantly followed by El Salvador (X tons) and Ecuador (X tons). All these countries together held approx. 38% share of total exports. Peru (X tons), Guatemala (X tons) and Chile (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Colombia was also the fastest-growing in terms of the semi-chemical fluting exports, with a CAGR of +49.2% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, El Salvador (+30.2%), Chile (+14.3%) and Guatemala (+10.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Ecuador experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Peru (-2.2%) and Brazil (-3.1%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Colombia and El Salvador increased by +43 and +8.5 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Colombia ($X), Brazil ($X) and El Salvador ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2021, with a combined 73% share of total exports.

In terms of the main exporting countries, Colombia, with a CAGR of +50.3%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Latin America and the Caribbean stood at $X per ton in 2021, surging by 16% against the previous year. Overall, the export price continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 an increase of 24% against the previous year. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2019 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was El Salvador ($X per ton), while Colombia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Ecuador (+4.7%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in Latin America and the Caribbean

In 2021, supplies from abroad of semi-chemical fluting increased by 13% to X tons, rising for the second year in a row after two years of decline. Total imports indicated a resilient increase from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +7.4% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +23.5% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when imports increased by 17%. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum in 2021 and are likely to continue growth in the near future.

In value terms, semi-chemical fluting imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Total imports indicated a remarkable increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +9.7% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +23.3% against 2018 indices. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

Mexico dominates imports structure, finishing at X tons, which was approx. 52% of total imports in 2021. Guatemala (X tons) took a 9.2% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by the Dominican Republic (7%), Chile (6.8%), Colombia (5.7%) and El Salvador (4.5%). Honduras (X tons) held a relatively small share of total imports.

Imports into Mexico increased at an average annual rate of +10.1% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Chile (+24.3%), the Dominican Republic (+6.2%), Honduras (+5.8%), Guatemala (+4.9%), El Salvador (+3.8%) and Colombia (+1.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Chile emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Latin America and the Caribbean, with a CAGR of +24.3% from 2012-2021. While the share of Mexico (+11 p.p.) and Chile (+5 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2021, the share of El Salvador (-1.6 p.p.), Guatemala (-2.1 p.p.) and Colombia (-3.7 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Mexico ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported semi-chemical fluting in Latin America and the Caribbean, comprising 50% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Guatemala ($X), with a 10% share of total imports. It was followed by Chile, with a 7.2% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in Mexico amounted to +12.3%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Guatemala (+8.8% per year) and Chile (+26.3% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in Latin America and the Caribbean amounted to $X per ton, rising by 14% against the previous year. Over the last nine-year period, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.2%. As a result, import price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
