Waferboard Market Size in Ireland

After two years of growth, the Irish waferboard market decreased by -37.1% to $X in 2021. In general, consumption, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, the market hit record highs at $X in 2020, and then fell markedly in the following year.

Waferboard Production in Ireland

In value terms, waferboard production shrank to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Overall, the total production indicated buoyant growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +7.7% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, production increased by +11.6% against 2018 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 57% against the previous year. Waferboard production peaked at $X in 2020, and then shrank in the following year.

After three years of growth, overseas shipments of waferboards decreased by -10.9% to X cubic meters in 2020. Over the period under review, total exports indicated buoyant growth from 2012 to 2020: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +12.4% over the last eight-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when exports increased by 65%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at X cubic meters in 2019, and then shrank in the following year.

In value terms, waferboard exports contracted to $X in 2020. In general, exports, however, showed significant growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 with an increase of 179% against the previous year. The exports peaked at $X in 2019, and then reduced in the following year.

Exports by Country

The UK (X cubic meters) was the main destination for waferboard exports from Ireland, with a 89% share of total exports. Moreover, waferboard exports to the UK exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, the United States (X cubic meters), more than tenfold. The third position in this ranking was held by Canada (X cubic meters), with a 2.4% share.

From 2012 to 2020, the average annual growth rate of volume to the UK amounted to +86.4%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: the United States (+112.7% per year) and Canada (-18.5% per year).

In value terms, the UK ($X) remains the key foreign market for waferboards exports from Ireland, comprising 89% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by France ($X), with a 6.4% share of total exports. It was followed by the United States, with a 2.6% share.

From 2012 to 2020, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to the UK stood at +102.4%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: France (+627.2% per year) and the United States (+110.3% per year).

Imports into Ireland

After four years of growth, overseas purchases of waferboards decreased by -4.5% to X cubic meters in 2020. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.2% from 2012 to 2020; the trend pattern remained consistent, with only minor fluctuations being observed in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 17% against the previous year. Imports peaked at X cubic meters in 2019, and then shrank slightly in the following year.

In value terms, waferboard imports contracted modestly to $X in 2020. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +4.5% from 2012 to 2020; the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when imports increased by 27% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2019, and then declined slightly in the following year.

Imports by Country

Portugal (X cubic meters), the UK (X cubic meters) and Spain (X cubic meters) were the main suppliers of waferboard imports to Ireland, together accounting for 89% of total imports. France, Belgium and Germany lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 11%.

From 2012 to 2020, the biggest increases were recorded for France (with a CAGR of +94.7%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Portugal ($X), the UK ($X) and Spain ($X) were the largest waferboard suppliers to Ireland, together comprising 87% of total imports. These countries were followed by Germany, Belgium and France, which together accounted for a further 12%.

France, with a CAGR of +72.3%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
