The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 53% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons, and then shrank in the following year.

In value terms, unbleached sulphate pulp exports fell to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, posted a strong increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 115% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X, and then declined in the following year.

Exports by Country

In 2022, Russia (X tons) represented the key exporter of unbleached sulphate pulp, creating 43% of total exports. Sweden (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 17% share, followed by Finland (17%) and France (15%). Austria (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Exports from Russia increased at an average annual rate of +1.3% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Finland (+295.8%), France (+236.5%) and Sweden (+7.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Finland emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Europe, with a CAGR of +295.8% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Austria (-3.7%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Finland (+17 p.p.) and France (+15 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Austria and Russia saw its share reduced by -6.2% and -27.4% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the largest unbleached sulphate pulp supplying countries in Europe were Russia ($X), Finland ($X) and Sweden ($X), with a combined 73% share of total exports.

Among the main exporting countries, Finland, with a CAGR of +268.0%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in Europe amounted to $X per ton, approximately mirroring the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 an increase of 41%. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was France ($X per ton), while Russia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

In 2022, after two years of growth, there was significant decline in supplies from abroad of unbleached sulphate pulp, when their volume decreased by -13.2% to X tons. Overall, imports, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when imports increased by 25%. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons, and then contracted in the following year.

Finland (X tons), the UK (X tons), Belgium (X tons), the Czech Republic (X tons), Poland (X tons), Estonia (X tons), Ukraine (X tons) and Portugal (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Germany experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of imports of unbleached sulphate pulp. At the same time, Estonia (+38.2%), Spain (+22.0%), the Czech Republic (+11.1%), Italy (+10.1%), Finland (+4.9%) and Switzerland (+2.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Estonia emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Europe, with a CAGR of +38.2% from 2012-2022. The UK and Poland experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Portugal (-3.2%), Belgium (-5.0%), France (-5.4%) and Ukraine (-10.2%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Italy (+4.6 p.p.), Spain (+3.9 p.p.), Estonia (+2.2 p.p.) and the Czech Republic (+1.8 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2022, the share of Belgium (-2.4 p.p.), Ukraine (-3.3 p.p.) and France (-4.8 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Germany ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported unbleached sulphate pulp in Europe, comprising 37% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Switzerland ($X), with a 9.6% share of total imports. It was followed by France, with a 7.5% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in Germany was relatively modest. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Switzerland (+2.8% per year) and France (-2.8% per year).

In 2022, the import price in Europe amounted to $X per ton, increasing by 3.9% against the previous year. In general, the import price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when the import price increased by 22%.
