Carbon Dioxide Exports

Exports in CIS

In 2022, exports of carbon dioxide in the CIS expanded modestly to X tons, picking up by X% on the year before. Over the period under review, exports continue to indicate a remarkable increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when exports increased by X%. The volume of export peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.

In value terms, carbon dioxide exports rose notably to $X in 2022. Total exports indicated a strong increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of X% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by X% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when exports increased by X%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

Exports by Country

In 2022, Russia (X tons) represented the largest exporter of carbon dioxide, achieving X% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Belarus (X tons), Moldova (X tons), Uzbekistan (X tons), Armenia (X tons) and Kazakhstan (X tons), together generating a X% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to carbon dioxide exports from Russia stood at X%. At the same time, Armenia (X%), Moldova (X%), Uzbekistan (X%), Kazakhstan (X%) and Belarus (X%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Armenia emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in the CIS, with a CAGR of X% from 2012-2022. Moldova (X p.p.), Uzbekistan (X p.p.) and Armenia (X p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Kazakhstan, Russia and Belarus saw its share reduced by X%, X% and X% from 2012 to 2022, respectively.

In value terms, Russia ($X) remains the largest carbon dioxide supplier in the CIS, comprising X% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Armenia ($X), with a X% share of total exports. It was followed by Kazakhstan, with an X% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Russia totaled X%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Armenia (X% per year) and Kazakhstan (X% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in the CIS stood at $X per ton in 2022, picking up by X% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, continues to indicate a pronounced reduction. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Kazakhstan ($X per ton), while Moldova ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Moldova (X%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

In 2022, approx. X tons of carbon dioxide were imported in the CIS; increasing by X% against 2021 figures. Total imports indicated buoyant growth from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of X% over the last decade. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when imports increased by X% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at $X in 2013; afterwards, it flattened through to 2022.

Imports by Country

Kazakhstan (X tons) and Russia (X tons) represented the largest importers of carbon dioxide in 2022, amounting to approx. X% and X% of total imports, respectively. Azerbaijan (X tons) held a X% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Tajikistan (X%) and Moldova (X%). The following importers - Kyrgyzstan (X tons) and Belarus (X tons) - each recorded an X% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Kyrgyzstan (with a CAGR of X%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Russia ($X), Kazakhstan ($X) and Belarus ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, together comprising X% of total imports. Azerbaijan, Moldova, Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further X%.

Kyrgyzstan, with a CAGR of X%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in the CIS amounted to $X per ton, declining by X% against the previous year. Overall, the import price showed a noticeable downturn. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 an increase of X% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Belarus ($X per ton), while Tajikistan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
