The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when the production volume increased by 25%. The level of production peaked at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, production failed to regain momentum.

In 2021, the amount of waferboards exported in Asia-Pacific amounted to X cubic meters, with an increase of 14% on 2020 figures. Total exports indicated resilient growth from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +7.0% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports increased by +44.5% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when exports increased by 27% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.

In value terms, waferboard exports soared to $X in 2021. Total exports indicated prominent growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +6.6% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, the exports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Exports by Country

In 2021, Thailand (X cubic meters) was the main exporter of waferboards, committing 80% of total exports. China (X cubic meters) held the second position in the ranking, followed by Malaysia (X cubic meters). All these countries together took approx. 16% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to waferboard exports from Thailand stood at +7.7%. At the same time, China (+21.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, China emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Asia-Pacific, with a CAGR of +21.1% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Malaysia (-7.6%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. China (+6.9 p.p.) and Thailand (+5.1 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Malaysia saw its share reduced by -14.4% from 2012 to 2021, respectively.

In value terms, Thailand ($X) remains the largest waferboard supplier in Asia-Pacific, comprising 70% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by China ($X), with a 16% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in Thailand amounted to +7.0%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: China (+19.5% per year) and Malaysia (-7.6% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in Asia-Pacific amounted to $X per cubic meter, picking up by 21% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 when the export price increased by 25% against the previous year. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per cubic meter. From 2020 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was China ($X per cubic meter), while Thailand ($X per cubic meter) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Malaysia (+0.0%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Waferboard Imports

Imports in Asia-Pacific

Waferboard imports reached X cubic meters in 2021, growing by 8% against 2020 figures. Total imports indicated prominent growth from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +6.3% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +12.9% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 with an increase of 23% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked in 2021 and is likely to see steady growth in the near future.

In value terms, waferboard imports surged to $X in 2021. Total imports indicated a prominent expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.3% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when imports increased by 29% against the previous year. The level of import peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

In 2021, South Korea (X cubic meters), distantly followed by China (X cubic meters), Malaysia (X cubic meters), Taiwan (Chinese) (X cubic meters), Vietnam (X cubic meters), Japan (X cubic meters) and Indonesia (X cubic meters) were the major importers of waferboards, together making up 92% of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for China (with a CAGR of +16.3%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest waferboard importing markets in Asia-Pacific were China ($X), South Korea ($X) and Taiwan (Chinese) ($X), with a combined 53% share of total imports.

In terms of the main importing countries, China, with a CAGR of +18.4%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in Asia-Pacific amounted to $X per cubic meter, surging by 18% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, recorded a mild reduction. Over the period under review, import prices attained the peak figure at $X per cubic meter in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Japan ($X per cubic meter), while South Korea ($X per cubic meter) was amongst the lowest.
