Waferboard Market Size in ASEAN

The ASEAN waferboard market shrank to $X in 2021, which is down by -6% against the previous year. In general, consumption saw a mild curtailment. As a result, consumption reached the peak level of $X. From 2016 to 2021, the growth of the market failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, waferboard production dropped slightly to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Overall, production recorded a mild reduction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 with an increase of 32% against the previous year. As a result, production attained the peak level of $X. From 2016 to 2021, production growth remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Thailand prevails in exports structure, reaching X cubic meters, which was near 91% of total exports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Malaysia (X cubic meters), mixing up a 6% share of total exports.

Thailand was also the fastest-growing in terms of the waferboards exports, with a CAGR of +7.7% from 2012 to 2021. Malaysia (-7.6%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Thailand (+13 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Malaysia saw its share reduced by -14.5% from 2012 to 2021, respectively.

In value terms, Thailand ($X) remains the largest waferboard supplier in ASEAN, comprising 88% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Malaysia ($X), with a 7.9% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in Thailand totaled +7.0%.

Waferboard Imports

Imports in ASEAN

In 2021, imports of waferboards in ASEAN skyrocketed to X cubic meters, picking up by 16% on 2020. Total imports indicated a prominent expansion from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +6.0% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +58.2% against 2018 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 with an increase of 24% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs in 2021 and are likely to continue growth in years to come.

In value terms, waferboard imports surged to $X in 2021. Total imports indicated a remarkable increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.7% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +30.4% against 2017 indices. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

Malaysia was the main importing country with an import of about X cubic meters, which finished at 51% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Vietnam (X cubic meters), Indonesia (X cubic meters) and the Philippines (X cubic meters), together committing a 47% share of total imports.

Imports into Malaysia increased at an average annual rate of +10.5% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Vietnam (+14.3%) and the Philippines (+8.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Vietnam emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in ASEAN, with a CAGR of +14.3% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Indonesia (-6.7%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Malaysia, Vietnam and the Philippines increased by +16, +11 and +8.9 percentage points, respectively.

In value terms, Malaysia ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported waferboards in ASEAN, comprising 42% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Vietnam ($X), with a 20% share of total imports. It was followed by the Philippines, with an 18% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in Malaysia amounted to +8.5%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Vietnam (+10.8% per year) and the Philippines (+13.4% per year).
