In 2022, exports of uncoated filter paper and paperboard in ASEAN reduced remarkably to X tons, which is down by -58.7% on the previous year's figure. In general, exports saw a deep slump. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 with an increase of 123%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, uncoated filter paper exports contracted to $X in 2022. Overall, exports continue to indicate a abrupt descent. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when exports increased by 58% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2022, Indonesia (X tons) was the major exporter of uncoated filter paper and paperboard, committing 55% of total exports. Singapore (X tons) took a 24% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Thailand (9.6%) and the Philippines (7.3%). The following exporters - Vietnam (X tons) and Malaysia (X tons) - each resulted at a 4.2% share of total exports.

Indonesia experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of exports of uncoated filter paper and paperboard. At the same time, Thailand (+13.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Thailand emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in ASEAN, with a CAGR of +13.5% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Vietnam (-4.1%), Malaysia (-19.9%), Singapore (-20.8%) and the Philippines (-22.5%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Indonesia (+42 p.p.) and Thailand (+9 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Malaysia, the Philippines and Singapore saw its share reduced by -2.2%, -15.1% and -35.3% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Singapore ($X), Indonesia ($X) and Thailand ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2022, together comprising 94% of total exports.

Thailand, with a CAGR of +9.0%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, in terms of the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the exports figures.

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in ASEAN amounted to $X per ton, increasing by 128% against the previous year. In general, the export price enjoyed a resilient expansion. As a result, the export price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Singapore ($X per ton), while the Philippines ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Singapore (+19.2%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in ASEAN

Uncoated filter paper imports plummeted to X tons in 2022, reducing by -35.3% on the previous year's figure. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 42%. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons, and then fell sharply in the following year.

In value terms, uncoated filter paper imports reduced dramatically to $X in 2022. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +1.2% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 37%. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X, and then plummeted in the following year.

Indonesia was the largest importer of uncoated filter paper and paperboard in ASEAN, with the volume of imports amounting to X tons, which was approx. 54% of total imports in 2022. Malaysia (X tons) held a 13% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Singapore (7.5%), the Philippines (7.5%), Vietnam (7.3%) and Cambodia (5.5%). Thailand (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

At the same time, Cambodia (+31.8%), Singapore (+11.8%), Vietnam (+8.2%) and the Philippines (+3.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Cambodia emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in ASEAN, with a CAGR of +31.8% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Malaysia (-2.2%) and Thailand (-9.8%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Cambodia (+5.1 p.p.), Singapore (+5 p.p.), Vietnam (+3.9 p.p.) and the Philippines (+1.9 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Malaysia, Indonesia and Thailand saw its share reduced by -3.7%, -4.7% and -8% from 2012 to 2022, respectively.

The second position in the ranking was taken by Malaysia ($X), with an 11% share of total imports. It was followed by the Philippines, with a 10% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Indonesia was relatively modest. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Malaysia (-2.2% per year) and the Philippines (+5.1% per year).
