The ASEAN other papers packaging market was finally on the rise to reach $X in 2022, after three years of decline. In general, consumption, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. As a result, consumption reached the peak level of $X. From 2019 to 2022, the growth of the market remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, other papers packaging production stood at $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Overall, production, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when the production volume increased by 549% against the previous year. As a result, production reached the peak level of $X. From 2019 to 2022, production growth failed to regain momentum.

Exports in ASEAN

In 2022, overseas shipments of other papers packaging decreased by -20.3% to X tons for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year rising trend. Total exports indicated perceptible growth from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.5% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +3.1% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 with an increase of 33% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2021, and then fell sharply in the following year.

In value terms, other papers packaging exports fell sharply to $X in 2022. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +2.1% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 45% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X, and then fell remarkably in the following year.

Exports by Country

In 2022, Malaysia (X tons) represented the key exporter of other papers packaging, mixing up 71% of total exports. Indonesia (X tons) took a 14% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Vietnam (8.6%) and Thailand (5.4%).

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to other papers packaging exports from Malaysia stood at +2.5%. At the same time, Vietnam (+45.3%), Thailand (+11.7%) and Indonesia (+3.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Vietnam emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in ASEAN, with a CAGR of +45.3% from 2012-2022. In value terms, Malaysia ($X) remains the largest other papers packaging supplier in ASEAN, comprising 71% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Indonesia ($X), with a 16% share of total exports. It was followed by Vietnam, with a 6.3% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Malaysia stood at +2.2%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Indonesia (+3.9% per year) and Vietnam (+36.8% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in ASEAN amounted to $X per ton, stabilizing at the previous year. Overall, the export price saw a mild decrease. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 an increase of 14%. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Thailand ($X per ton), while Vietnam ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Indonesia (+0.4%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Imports in ASEAN

In 2022, approx. X tons of other papers packaging were imported in ASEAN; with a decrease of -2.2% compared with the previous year. Total imports indicated a moderate increase from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.7% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +9.1% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when imports increased by 52% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, other papers packaging imports shrank slightly to $X in 2022. Total imports indicated moderate growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.6% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +34.3% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when imports increased by 50%. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2019 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

Vietnam (X tons) and Thailand (X tons) dominates imports structure, together committing 75% of total imports. Indonesia (X tons) took an 8% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Malaysia (7%) and the Philippines (4.8%). Singapore (X tons) held a relatively small share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Malaysia (with a CAGR of +7.0%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest other papers packaging importing markets in ASEAN were Vietnam ($X), Thailand ($X) and Indonesia ($X), together accounting for 80% of total imports.

Thailand, with a CAGR of +6.7%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The import price in ASEAN stood at $X per ton in 2022, approximately reflecting the previous year. In general, the import price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when the import price increased by 23% against the previous year. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2019 to 2022, the import prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Indonesia ($X per ton), while Vietnam ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
