In 2022, overseas shipments of paperboard case materials decreased by -33% to X tons, falling for the second consecutive year after four years of growth. In general, exports, however, continue to indicate a resilient increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when exports increased by 57%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, paperboard case material exports fell dramatically to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, showed a resilient increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 68% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at $X in 2021, and then fell rapidly in the following year.

In 2022, Indonesia (X tons) was the main exporter of paperboard case materials, achieving 50% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Thailand (X tons), Vietnam (X tons) and Malaysia (X tons), together generating a 48% share of total exports.

Exports from Indonesia increased at an average annual rate of +12.4% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Vietnam (+13.3%) and Malaysia (+3.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. In Indonesia, paperboard case material exports expanded at an average annual rate of +13.7% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Thailand (+0.1% per year) and Vietnam (+8.8% per year).

In 2022, the export price in ASEAN amounted to $X per ton, surging by 10% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. In 2022, overseas purchases of paperboard case materials were finally on the rise to reach X tons after two years of decline. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +4.0% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 31%. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.

In value terms, paperboard case material imports stood at $X in 2022. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +4.9% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when imports increased by 21%. The level of import peaked in 2022 and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
