In 2023, the African iron and steel market decreased by X% to $X for the first time since 2020, thus ending a two-year rising trend. Overall, consumption, however, showed a perceptible reduction. In 2023, overseas shipments of iron and steel increased by X% to X tons, rising for the third year in a row after two years of decline. Over the period under review, exports, however, continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of X% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2023, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, iron and steel exports declined markedly to $X in 2023. Overall, exports, however, recorded a perceptible downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of X%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2023, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

South Africa dominates exports structure, resulting at X tons, which was approx. X% of total exports in 2023. Algeria (X tons) took a minor share of total exports.

South Africa experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of exports of iron and steel. Algeria (X%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of South Africa (X p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2023, the share of Algeria (X p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest iron and steel supplier in Africa, comprising X% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Algeria ($X), with a X% share of total exports.

In 2023, the export price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, which is down by X% against the previous year. In general, the export price recorded a perceptible downturn. Iron and steel imports reached X tons in 2023, stabilizing at the year before. Overall, imports, however, continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when imports increased by X%. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2019 to 2023, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, iron and steel imports dropped to $X in 2023. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate a slight curtailment. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of X%. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2023, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2023, Democratic Republic of the Congo (X tons), Togo (X tons), Egypt (X tons), Kenya (X tons), Sudan (X tons) and Tunisia (X tons) represented the largest importer of iron and steel in Africa, creating X% of total import. Mozambique (X tons) took the next position in the ranking, followed by Benin (X tons). All these countries together took approx. X% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2023, the biggest increases were recorded for Democratic Republic of the Congo (with a CAGR of X%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
