For the third year in a row, the African carbon dioxide market recorded growth in sales value, which increased by X% to $X in 2022. The market value increased at an average annual rate of X% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. Over the period under review, the market hit record highs in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.
Carbon Dioxide Production in Africa
In value terms, carbon dioxide production declined slightly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of X%. As a result, production attained the peak level of $X. From 2016 to 2022, production growth remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports in Africa
In 2022, the amount of carbon dioxide exported in Africa rose remarkably to X tons, growing by X% against the year before. Total exports indicated measured growth from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of X% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by X% against 2016 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of X% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.
In value terms, carbon dioxide exports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when exports increased by X% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.
Exports by Country
South Africa represented the key exporting country with an export of about X tons, which resulted at X% of total exports. Kenya (X tons) took a X% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Egypt (X%) and Swaziland (X%). Tanzania (X tons), Malawi (X tons) and Nigeria (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the leading exporting countries, was attained by Malawi (with a CAGR of X%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Kenya ($X), South Africa ($X) and Tanzania ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2022, together accounting for X% of total exports. Egypt, Nigeria, Swaziland and Malawi lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further X%.
Malawi, with a CAGR of X%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, in terms of the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
The export price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2022, remaining stable against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, continues to indicate a perceptible decrease. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 an increase of X%. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Tanzania ($X per ton), while Egypt ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Tanzania (X%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.
Carbon Dioxide Imports
Imports in Africa
Carbon dioxide imports expanded remarkably to X tons in 2022, picking up by X% against 2021 figures. Overall, imports showed a buoyant expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when imports increased by X%. The volume of import peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.
In value terms, carbon dioxide imports surged to $X in 2022. Total imports indicated prominent growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of X% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by X% against 2020 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when imports increased by X% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum in 2022 and are likely to see gradual growth in the near future.
Imports by Country
Tanzania (X tons) and Morocco (X tons) represented the key importers of carbon dioxide in 2022, reaching near X% and X% of total imports, respectively. Zimbabwe (X tons) took a X% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Zambia (X%) and Mozambique (X%). The following importers - Senegal (X tons), Guinea (X tons), Ghana (X tons), South Africa (X tons), Namibia (X tons), Botswana (X tons), Cote d'Ivoire (X tons) and Malawi (X tons) - together made up X% of total imports.
From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Cote d'Ivoire (with a CAGR of X%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Zimbabwe ($X per ton), while Namibia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
