Wheat prices in Europe are influenced by various factors, including supply and demand dynamics, weather conditions, government policies, and global market trends. Europe is one of the major wheat-producing regions in the world, with countries like France, Germany, and the United Kingdom being significant contributors to the overall wheat production in the continent.
The European wheat market is highly dependent on the quality and quantity of the harvest, which can vary from year to year. Weather conditions, such as excessive rainfall or drought, can significantly impact wheat production and ultimately affect prices. In addition, diseases and pests can also damage crops, leading to a decrease in supply and higher prices.
Government policies and regulations also play a crucial role in shaping wheat prices. The Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) of the European Union (EU) provides support to farmers through subsidies, direct payments, and market interventions. These measures aim to stabilize agriculture, ensure food security, and maintain a fair income for farmers. Changes in CAP policies can have implications for wheat prices, as they influence production costs and market competitiveness.
Global market trends have a considerable influence on wheat prices in Europe. As wheat is a traded commodity, international market dynamics, including supply and demand from major wheat-producing and consuming countries, can affect prices. Factors such as changes in global demand, trade disputes, currency fluctuations, and geopolitical tensions can all impact the wheat market and lead to price fluctuations.
Another important aspect influencing wheat prices in Europe is the quality standards and grading systems in place. The EU has strict quality requirements for wheat, which are designed to ensure food safety and maintain high quality standards. The presence of contaminants or variations in quality can lead to price differentials between wheat of different grades.
Overall, wheat prices in Europe are influenced by a combination of supply and demand factors, weather conditions, government policies, global market trends, and quality standards. Farmers, traders, and other stakeholders closely monitor these factors to make informed decisions and manage price risks in the European wheat market.

In 2022, wheat price growth is forecast to slow down with sufficient global production and falling demand for feed grains in the U.S. and the EU. Global wheat output is set to remain at the 2021’s level of approx. 777M tons.
The average annual wheat price in the U.S. is forecast to drop by 2% y-o-y to $250 per ton in 2022, falling on reduced domestic consumption coupled with stable supply worldwide. The market balance will be buoyed by production gains in Argentina and the EU that will offset decreasing output in Brazil and Paraguay.
This year, harvests in the EU, the U.S., the UK, Argentina, Morocco and Ukraine are expected to increase, leading to a growth in wheat production. Even though global stockpiles of grains will remain high, there are boosted expectations for inflation due to forecasts of record demand and increased prices for other cereal grains. The rising global population and bioethanol production are key factors leading to this growth in demand for wheat. Another driving factor is the emerging trend in the EU to use more wheat in animal feed rather than barley.
Global wheat production will reach 758.3 million tons in 2020, showing a slight decrease of 0.5 percent over the previous year's highs and still at a fairly high level.
Global wheat consumption amounted to X thousand tons in 2015, remaining constant against the previous year level.
