Consumption By Country

The United States (1.6B units) remains the largest tooth brush consuming country worldwide, comprising approx. 18% of total volume. Moreover, tooth brush consumption in the United States exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest consumer, India (585M units), threefold. The third position in this ranking was taken by China (570M units), with a 6.1% share.

In the United States, tooth brush consumption increased at an average annual rate of +5.3% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining consuming countries recorded the following average annual rates of consumption growth: India (+3.4% per year) and China (-6.0% per year).

In value terms, the largest tooth brush markets worldwide were the United States ($404M), Russia ($317M) and Indonesia ($297M), together accounting for 25% of the global market. India, Germany, France, China, Mexico, Saudi Arabia, Spain, Japan, Brazil and the United Arab Emirates lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 27%.

Saudi Arabia, with a CAGR of +14.8%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to market size in terms of the main consuming countries over the period under review, while market for the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, the highest levels of tooth brush per capita consumption was registered in the United Arab Emirates (17 units per person), followed by the United States (4.9 units per person), Saudi Arabia (4.7 units per person) and Germany (3.7 units per person), while the world average per capita consumption of tooth brush was estimated at 1.2 units per person.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of the tooth brush per capita consumption in the United Arab Emirates was relatively modest. Production

World Production of Tooth Brushes

In 2022, the amount of tooth brushes produced worldwide shrank to 12B units, with a decrease of -3.3% against the previous year. In general, production, however, posted notable growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when the production volume increased by 90%. Global production peaked at 12B units in 2021, and then reduced slightly in the following year.

In value terms, tooth brush production contracted modestly to $4.3B in 2022 estimated in export price. Overall, production, however, posted a resilient expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 36%. Over the period under review, global production reached the peak level at $4.5B in 2021, and then fell modestly in the following year.

Production By Country

China (6.7B units) constituted the country with the largest volume of tooth brush production, comprising approx. 57% of total volume. Moreover, tooth brush production in China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, India (838M units), eightfold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Germany (714M units), with a 6% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume in China amounted to +3.0%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: India (+5.8% per year) and Germany (+8.0% per year).

Imports

World Imports of Tooth Brushes

In 2022, approx. 7.7B units of tooth brushes were imported worldwide; with an increase of 23% against the year before. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +4.1% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, tooth brush imports amounted to $3.2B in 2022. Overall, total imports indicated a strong increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.6% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +71.8% against 2012 indices. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Imports By Country

In 2022, the United States (1.4B units), distantly followed by Germany (687M units), China (411M units) and Brazil (369M units) were the largest importers of tooth brushes, together committing 37% of total imports. Mexico (216M units), Russia (212M units), Thailand (194M units), Japan (185M units), the United Arab Emirates (183M units), Hungary (170M units), France (168M units), the Philippines (146M units) and Poland (144M units) took a little share of total imports.

Imports into the United States increased at an average annual rate of +2.8% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Hungary (+26.9%), China (+17.6%), the Philippines (+14.2%), Brazil (+7.8%), Poland (+7.6%), Germany (+6.9%), Russia (+3.7%), France (+3.4%), Mexico (+2.6%) and Thailand (+2.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Hungary emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in the world, with a CAGR of +26.9% from 2012-2022. The United Arab Emirates and Japan experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. From 2012 to 2022, the share of China, Germany and Hungary increased by +3.8, +2 and +1.9 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Germany ($426M), the United States ($315M) and Japan ($121M) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, with a combined 27% share of global imports. France, Poland, Hungary, China, Brazil, the United Arab Emirates, Russia, Thailand, Mexico and the Philippines lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 20%.

Import Prices By Country

The average tooth brush import price stood at $0.4 per unit in 2022, reducing by -9.9% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.4%. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 an increase of 13%. Global import price peaked at $0.5 per unit in 2021, and then fell in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Japan ($0.7 per unit), while Brazil ($0.2 per unit) was amongst the lowest.

In 2022, shipments abroad of tooth brushes increased by 23% to 10B units, rising for the second year in a row after two years of decline. Over the period under review, exports enjoyed a notable expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 127%. The global exports peaked in 2022 and are likely to see gradual growth in the immediate term.

Overall, total exports indicated buoyant growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.8% over the last decade. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when exports increased by 12%. Over the period under review, the global exports attained the maximum in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.

Exports By Country

China represented the key exporter of tooth brushes in the world, with the volume of exports amounting to 6.6B units, which was near 65% of total exports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Germany (1.1B units), achieving an 11% share of total exports. India (394M units), Thailand (279M units), Switzerland (249M units), Vietnam (180M units) and Ireland (177M units) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Exports from China increased at an average annual rate of +5.0% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, India (+10.6%), Germany (+7.8%), Thailand (+5.2%), Ireland (+4.3%) and Vietnam (+2.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, India emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in the world, with a CAGR of +10.6% from 2012-2022. Switzerland experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Germany and India increased by +2.5 and +1.6 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, China ($956M), Germany ($555M) and Switzerland ($202M) constituted the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2022, with a combined 56% share of global exports. Vietnam, India, Ireland and Thailand lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 10%.

India, with a CAGR of +7.3%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, in terms of the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices By Country

In 2022, the average tooth brush export price amounted to $0.3 per unit, declining by -9.3% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when the average export price increased by 89% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the average export prices reached the maximum at $0.6 per unit in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Switzerland ($0.8 per unit), while China ($0.1 per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Switzerland (+3.5%), while the other global leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.
