Sweet Potato Price in the United States (FOB) - 2023
The average sweet potato export price stood at $700 per ton in August 2023, surging by 3.9% against the previous month. Over the period under review, the export price saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in June 2023 when the average export price increased by 5.2% m-o-m. Over the period under review, the average export prices attained the maximum in August 2023.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major foreign markets. In August 2023, the country with the highest price was Mexico ($859 per ton), while the average price for exports to the UK ($489 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From August 2022 to August 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to the Netherlands (+2.2%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
Sweet Potato Price in the United States (CIF) - 2023
In August 2023, the average sweet potato import price amounted to $1,064 per ton, surging by 23% against the previous month. Over the period under review, the import price posted buoyant growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in November 2022 when the average import price increased by 130% against the previous month. The import price peaked at $1,426 per ton in December 2022; however, from January 2023 to August 2023, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by the country of origin: the country with the highest price was Honduras ($1,804 per ton), while the price for China ($602 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From August 2022 to August 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the Dominican Republic (+4.0%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
Sweet Potato Exports in the United States
After three years of growth, shipments abroad of sweet potatoes decreased by -7.2% to 252K tons in 2022. In general, exports continue to indicate a slight curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when exports increased by 3.2%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of 271K tons, and then shrank in the following year.
In value terms, sweet potato exports contracted to $166M in 2022. Overall, exports showed a pronounced curtailment. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when exports increased by 0.6%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $189M. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Sweet potato imports into the United States soared to 38K tons in 2022, with an increase of 49% compared with 2021. Overall, imports posted a significant increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when imports increased by 121%. Imports peaked in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.
In value terms, sweet potato imports surged to $43M in 2022. In general, imports showed significant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when imports increased by 114% against the previous year.
