Rice Price in Finland (CIF) - 2023
In July 2023, the average rice import price amounted to $1,483 per ton, dropping by -5.4% against the previous month. Over the last twelve-month period, it increased at an average monthly rate of +2.6%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in January 2023 when the average import price increased by 9.1% against the previous month. Over the period under review, average import prices reached the peak figure at $1,568 per ton in June 2023, and then declined in the following month.
Prices varied noticeably by the country of origin: the country with the highest price was Belgium ($2,155 per ton), while the price for Thailand ($915 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From July 2022 to July 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Italy (+3.8%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, the average rice export price amounted to $1,566 per ton, waning by -5.9% against the previous year. In general, export price indicated temperate growth from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +2.1% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, rice export price increased by +53.9% against 2017 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 an increase of 35%. Over the period under review, the average export prices reached the maximum at $1,665 per ton in 2021, and then shrank in the following year.
Average prices varied noticeably for the major overseas markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Sweden ($1,572 per ton), while the average price for exports to Russia ($1,350 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to France (+9.1%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced mixed trend patterns.
Rice Imports in Finland
For the fourth year in a row, Finland recorded growth in overseas purchases of rice, which increased by 16% to 35K tons in 2022. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +8.9% from 2019 to 2022; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
In value terms, rice imports surged to $43M in 2022. Overall, total imports indicated a remarkable increase from 2019 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +14.8% over the last three years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +51.3% against 2019 indices.
