Sweet Potato Production in the United States - 2022
For the third consecutive year, the United States recorded decline in production of sweet potatoes, which decreased by -10.9% to 1.2M tons in 2022. Over the period under review, production continues to indicate a abrupt decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 17% against the previous year. Sweet potato production peaked at 1.6M tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, production failed to regain momentum. Sweet potato output in the United States indicated a deep slump, which was largely conditioned by a abrupt setback of the harvested area and a noticeable shrinkage in yield figures.
In value terms, sweet potato production contracted slightly to $999M in 2022. In general, production showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 32%. As a result, production attained the peak level of $1B. From 2020 to 2022, production growth remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2022, the harvested area of sweet potatoes in the United States contracted to 54K ha, falling by -13.7% compared with the previous year's figure. Over the period under review, the harvested area recorded a perceptible decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when the harvested area increased by 5.9%. The sweet potato harvested area peaked at 64K ha in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, the harvested area remained at a lower figure.

In 2022, the average yield of sweet potatoes in the United States reached 22 tons per ha, picking up by 3.3% against 2021 figures. Over the period under review, the yield, however, recorded a noticeable shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 15%. The sweet potato yield peaked at 25 tons per ha in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, the yield stood at a somewhat lower figure.
