Sugar Cane Production in Sri Lanka - 2022
In 2022, the amount of sugar cane produced in Sri Lanka rose rapidly to 877K tons, growing by 6.2% compared with the previous year's figure. The total output volume increased at an average annual rate of +6.0% from 2017 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 31%. Sugar cane production peaked in 2022 and is likely to see gradual growth in the near future. Sugar cane output in Sri Lanka indicated a remarkable increase, which was largely conditioned by a prominent expansion of the harvested area and buoyant growth in yield figures.
In value terms, sugar cane production rose rapidly to $2.5B in 2022 estimated in export price. The total output value increased at an average annual rate of +1.7% from 2017 to 2022; however, the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations in certain years. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 with an increase of 34%. As a result, production attained the peak level of $2.6B. From 2021 to 2022, production growth remained at a lower figure.

Over the period under review, the average sugar cane yield hit record highs at 59 tons per ha in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the yield failed to regain momentum.
