In November 2023, the average import price for tomatoes; prepared or preserved otherwise than by vinegar or acetic acid amounted to $1,622 per ton, picking up by 3.1% against the previous month. Overall, the import price continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in April 2023 an increase of 12% against the previous month. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $1,712 per ton. From May 2023 to November 2023, the average import prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In November 2023, the country with the highest price was Hungary ($2,570 per ton), while the price for Spain ($898 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From November 2022 to November 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Hungary (+3.3%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.

Overall, the export price saw a slight slump. The growth pace was the most rapid in August 2023 an increase of 13% m-o-m. The export price peaked at $2,167 per ton in December 2022; however, from January 2023 to November 2023, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Average prices varied somewhat for the major overseas markets. In November 2023, the highest price was recorded for prices to the Czech Republic ($1,884 per ton) and Romania ($1,712 per ton), while the average price for exports to Hungary ($1,345 per ton) and Poland ($1,466 per ton) were amongst the lowest.

In value terms, imports of tomatoes; prepared or preserved otherwise than by vinegar or acetic acid rose significantly to $93M in 2022. Overall, total imports indicated significant growth from 2019 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +20.6% over the last three years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +75.3% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 35%. Imports peaked in 2022 and are likely to continue growth in the near future.
