In 2022, the average import price for siliceous fossil meals (kieselguhr, tripolite and diatomite) amounted to $506 per ton, reducing by -21.5% against the previous year. Overall, the import price showed a abrupt slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when the average import price increased by 16% against the previous year. The import price peaked at $1,076 per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Denmark ($966 per ton), while the price for South Africa ($333 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by China (+5.4%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced a decline.

The average export price for siliceous fossil meals (kieselguhr, tripolite and diatomite) stood at $1,229 per ton in 2022, rising by 52% against the previous year. Over the period under review, export price indicated prominent growth from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +5.5% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when the average export price increased by 57% against the previous year. The export price peaked at $1,438 per ton in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

As there is only one major export destination, the average price level is determined by prices for Tanzania.

From 2012 to 2022, the rate of growth in terms of prices for Tanzania amounted to +1.6% per year.

Imports of Siliceous Fossil Meal (Kieselguhr, Tripolite and Diatomite) in Uganda

For the third year in a row, Uganda recorded decline in overseas purchases of siliceous fossil meals (kieselguhr, tripolite and diatomite), which decreased by -64.5% to 47 tons in 2022. Overall, imports faced a sharp reduction. The smallest decline of -12.7% was in 2021.

In value terms, imports of siliceous fossil meals (kieselguhr, tripolite and diatomite) shrank markedly to $24K in 2022. Over the period under review, imports saw a significant decline. The smallest decline of -18.7% was in 2021.

Over the period under review, exports, however, continue to indicate significant growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 with an increase of 336% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of 30 tons, and then shrank rapidly in the following year.

In value terms, exports of siliceous fossil meals (kieselguhr, tripolite and diatomite) fell sharply to $18K in 2022. Overall, exports, however, showed a significant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 329% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $25K, and then fell sharply in the following year.
