Price for Oil Seeds; Sunflower Seeds, Whether or Not Broken in China (FOB) - 2023

The average export price for sunflower seed stood at $1,669 per ton in December 2023, approximately equating the previous month. Over the period under review, the export price continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in March 2023 when the average export price increased by 6.9% m-o-m. The export price peaked at $2,057 per ton in August 2023; however, from September 2023 to December 2023, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major foreign markets. In December 2023, the country with the highest price was Spain ($2,100 per ton), while the average price for exports to Indonesia ($1,326 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From December 2022 to December 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Russia (+1.7%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average import price for sunflower seed stood at $706 per ton in December 2023, surging by 6.1% against the previous month. Over the last twelve months, it increased at an average monthly rate of +1.7%. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in April 2023 an increase of 25% against the previous month. Over the period under review, average import prices reached the peak figure at $932 per ton in May 2023; however, from June 2023 to December 2023, import prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by the country of origin: the country with the highest price was Bulgaria ($865 per ton), while the price for Kazakhstan ($498 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From December 2022 to December 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Kazakhstan (+0.4%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced a decline.

In 2022, the amount of sunflower seed exported from China was estimated at 445K tons, increasing by 4.3% compared with the year before. Overall, exports, however, saw a pronounced setback. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when exports increased by 5.8%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of 508K tons. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of the exports of remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, exports of sunflower seed soared to $679M in 2022. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +3.0% from 2019 to 2022; the trend pattern remained consistent, with only minor fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, the exports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
