Preservative-Treated Rough Wood Price in South Africa (FOB) - 2023
The average preservative-treated rough wood export price stood at $387 per cubic meter in July 2023, increasing by 5% against the previous month. In general, the export price showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in September 2022 when the average export price increased by 78% against the previous month. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $555 per cubic meter. From October 2022 to July 2023, the the average export prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably by the country of destination: the country with the highest price was Zambia ($972 per cubic meter), while the average price for exports to Malawi ($285 per cubic meter) was amongst the lowest.
From July 2022 to July 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Zambia (+12.2%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
Preservative-Treated Rough Wood Price in South Africa (CIF) - 2023
In July 2023, the average preservative-treated rough wood import price amounted to $324 per cubic meter, remaining constant against the previous month. Overall, import price indicated a tangible increase from July 2022 to July 2023: its price increased at an average monthly rate of +4.1% over the last twelve months. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on July 2023 figures, preservative-treated rough wood import price decreased by -1.1% against March 2023 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in December 2022 when the average import price increased by 63% m-o-m. Over the period under review, average import prices hit record highs at $327 per cubic meter in March 2023; however, from April 2023 to July 2023, import prices remained at a lower figure.
Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major supplying countries. In July 2023, the country with the highest price was Swaziland ($326 per cubic meter), while the price for Zimbabwe totaled $268 per cubic meter.
From July 2022 to July 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Swaziland (+4.1%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
Preservative-Treated Rough Wood Exports in South Africa
In 2022, shipments abroad of preservative-treated rough wood was finally on the rise to reach 100K cubic meters for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Overall, exports, however, saw a abrupt decline. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at 158K cubic meters in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, preservative-treated rough wood exports dropped to $29M in 2022. In general, exports, however, saw a noticeable downturn. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when exports increased by 4.6% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $32M in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.
