Peat Price in the Netherlands (FOB) - 2023

In August 2023, the average peat export price amounted to $262 per ton, dropping by -2.9% against the previous month. Over the last twelve months, it increased at an average monthly rate of +1.4%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in December 2022 an increase of 9.7% against the previous month. Over the period under review, the average export prices reached the peak figure at $270 per ton in July 2023, and then contracted slightly in the following month.

Prices varied noticeably by the country of destination: the country with the highest price was the UK ($387 per ton), while the average price for exports to Switzerland ($190 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From August 2022 to August 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Italy (+5.6%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Peat Price in the Netherlands (CIF) - 2022

In 2021, the average peat import price amounted to $87 per ton, rising by 27% against the previous year. Over the last nine-year period, it increased at an average annual rate of +3.4%. As a result, import price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Denmark ($278 per ton), while the price for Germany ($69 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Germany (+4.6%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.

Peat Exports in the Netherlands

In 2022, after three years of growth, there was significant decline in overseas shipments of peat, when their volume decreased by -30.3% to 925K tons. Over the period under review, exports, however, continue to indicate strong growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when exports increased by 87% against the previous year.

In value terms, peat exports contracted to $201M in 2022. Overall, total exports indicated a significant expansion from 2019 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +20.9% over the last three years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +76.6% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 74% against the previous year.

Peat Imports in the Netherlands

In 2022, the amount of peat imported into the Netherlands shrank to 1.8M tons, falling by -7.7% on the previous year's figure. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when imports increased by 22%. As a result, imports attained the peak of 1.9M tons, and then contracted in the following year.

In value terms, peat imports surged to $192M in 2022. Overall, total imports indicated a buoyant increase from 2019 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +15.3% over the last three-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +78.1% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 55%. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.
