Paperboard Price in the United States (FOB) - 2023
The average paperboard export price stood at $737 per ton in August 2023, dropping by -1.9% against the previous month. In general, the export price continues to indicate a slight decline. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in October 2022 when the average export price increased by 1.8% m-o-m. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $950 per ton. From November 2022 to August 2023, the the average export prices remained at a lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by the country of destination: the country with the highest price was Japan ($1,025 per ton), while the average price for exports to China ($510 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From August 2022 to August 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Japan (-0.3%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.
Paperboard Price in the United States (CIF) - 2023
The average paperboard import price stood at $1,062 per ton in August 2023, dropping by -2.7% against the previous month. In general, the import price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in October 2022 when the average import price increased by 3.5% against the previous month. Over the period under review, average import prices attained the peak figure at $1,241 per ton in November 2022; however, from December 2022 to August 2023, import prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In August 2023, the country with the highest price was Germany ($1,862 per ton), while the price for China ($905 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From August 2022 to August 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Germany (+1.1%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
Paperboard Exports in the United States
In 2022, paperboard exports from the United States expanded modestly to 7M tons, growing by 2.9% compared with the previous year's figure. Over the period under review, exports saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when exports increased by 7.3% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of 7.3M tons. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, paperboard exports soared to $6.4B in 2022. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +7.9% over the period from 2019 to 2022; the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. As a result, the exports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Paperboard Imports in the United States
For the fourth year in a row, the United States recorded growth in purchases abroad of paperboard, which increased by 2.9% to 2.7M tons in 2022. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +4.3% from 2019 to 2022; the trend pattern remained consistent, with only minor fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 8.3% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.
In value terms, paperboard imports skyrocketed to $3B in 2022. In general, total imports indicated a buoyant expansion from 2019 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +12.6% over the last three years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +45.5% against 2020 indices. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
