Paddy Rice Price in Costa Rica (CIF) - 2022
In 2022, the average paddy rice import price amounted to $410 per ton, growing by 27% against the previous year. In general, the import price saw a modest expansion. Over the period under review, average import prices reached the peak figure at $419 per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.
Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the United States ($424 per ton), while the price for Uruguay ($370 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the United States (+1.5%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced a decline.
Paddy Rice Price in Costa Rica (FOB) - 2022
The average paddy rice export price stood at $1,522 per ton in 2022, flattening at the previous year. In general, export price indicated a pronounced expansion from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +4.6% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, paddy rice export price decreased by -8.4% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 an increase of 128%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $1,662 per ton. From 2020 to 2022, the average export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.
As there is only one major export destination, the average price level is determined by prices for Panama.
From 2012 to 2022, the rate of growth in terms of prices for Guatemala amounted to +6.8% per year.
Paddy Rice Imports in Costa Rica
In 2022, approx. 183K tons of paddy rice were imported into Costa Rica; growing by 16% against the year before. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +7.2% from 2019 to 2022; the trend pattern remained consistent, with only minor fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when imports increased by 24% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of 185K tons. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, paddy rice imports surged to $75M in 2022. In general, total imports indicated prominent growth from 2019 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +16.7% over the last three-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +58.9% against 2019 indices. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Paddy Rice Exports in Costa Rica
In 2022, shipments abroad of paddy rice decreased by -10.6% to 311 tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a three-year rising trend. In general, exports, however, recorded a significant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when exports increased by 162%.
In value terms, paddy rice exports shrank to $473K in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, posted a significant expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when exports increased by 140%.
