Mullite Price in Japan (CIF) - 2023

In September 2023, the average mullite import price amounted to $407 per ton, with a decrease of -26.2% against the previous month. Over the period under review, the import price saw a pronounced contraction. The growth pace was the most rapid in April 2023 an increase of 21% against the previous month. Over the period under review, average import prices attained the peak figure at $645 per ton in December 2022; however, from January 2023 to September 2023, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by the country of origin: the country with the highest price was Hungary ($1,281 per ton), while the price for China ($363 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From September 2022 to September 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the United States (+1.2%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced mixed trend patterns.

Mullite Price in Japan (FOB) - 2022

In 2022, the average mullite export price amounted to $1,232 per ton, remaining stable against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, showed a noticeable shrinkage. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when the average export price increased by 11%. The export price peaked at $1,561 per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Average prices varied somewhat for the major foreign markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the highest price was recorded for prices to Germany ($1,346 per ton) and Thailand ($1,336 per ton), while the average price for exports to China ($903 per ton) and Taiwan (Chinese) ($925 per ton) were amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to South Korea (-0.5%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.

Mullite Imports in Japan

Mullite imports into Japan totaled 20K tons in 2022, picking up by 7.7% on 2021 figures. In general, total imports indicated a temperate increase from 2019 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.7% over the last three-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +67.7% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when imports increased by 56% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.

In value terms, mullite imports soared to $11M in 2022. Over the period under review, total imports indicated a strong increase from 2019 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +8.9% over the last three-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +93.9% against 2020 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 48% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

Mullite Exports in Japan

Mullite exports from Japan dropped to 2.1K tons in 2022, reducing by -10.6% compared with 2021 figures. Overall, exports, however, posted a buoyant expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 157% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of 2.3K tons, and then contracted in the following year.

In value terms, mullite exports contracted to $2.6M in 2022. In general, exports, however, continue to indicate a strong increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 165%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $2.8M, and then shrank in the following year.
