Mandarin and Clementine Price in Portugal (CIF) - 2023
In June 2023, the average mandarin and clementine import price amounted to $1,424 per ton, jumping by 16% against the previous month. In general, import price indicated a temperate expansion from June 2022 to June 2023: its price increased at an average monthly rate of +3.3% over the last twelve months. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on June 2023 figures, mandarin and clementine import price decreased by -1.6% against April 2023 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in March 2023 an increase of 23% m-o-m. Over the period under review, average import prices hit record highs at $1,448 per ton in April 2023; afterwards, it flattened through to June 2023.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In June 2023, the country with the highest price was the Netherlands ($1,767 per ton), while the price for Spain ($1,077 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From June 2022 to June 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the Netherlands (+2.7%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
Mandarin and Clementine Price in Portugal (FOB) - 2023
The average mandarin and clementine export price stood at $1,770 per ton in June 2023, rising by 19% against the previous month. Over the period under review, export price indicated a resilient increase from June 2022 to June 2023: its price increased at an average monthly rate of +5.7% over the last twelve-month period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on June 2023 figures, mandarin and clementine export price increased by +45.6% against April 2023 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in July 2022 an increase of 38% m-o-m. The export price peaked in June 2023.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major external markets. In June 2023, the country with the highest price was Cabo Verde ($2,387 per ton), while the average price for exports to Poland ($1,314 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From June 2022 to June 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to France (+9.9%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
Mandarin and Clementine Imports in Portugal
After three years of growth, purchases abroad of tangerines, mandarins, clementines, satsumas decreased by -6.5% to 43K tons in 2022. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +6.8% over the period from 2019 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 24% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of 46K tons, and then declined in the following year.
In value terms, mandarin and clementine imports declined rapidly to $37M in 2022. In general, total imports indicated a buoyant expansion from 2019 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +10.6% over the last three-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +35.2% against 2019 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when imports increased by 34%. As a result, imports reached the peak of $45M, and then reduced dramatically in the following year.

The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 7.8% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs in 2022 and are likely to continue growth in years to come.
In value terms, mandarin and clementine exports shrank modestly to $26M in 2022. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +9.5% over the period from 2019 to 2022; the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when exports increased by 21% against the previous year.
