Lentil Price in Italy (CIF) - 2023
In June 2023, the average lentil import price amounted to $1,249 per ton, picking up by 14% against the previous month. In general, the import price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The import price peaked at $1,303 per ton in June 2022; however, from July 2022 to June 2023, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major supplying countries. In June 2023, the highest price was recorded for prices from Turkey ($1,486 per ton) and the Netherlands ($1,203 per ton), while the price for Canada ($1,119 per ton) and France ($1,158 per ton) were amongst the lowest.
From June 2022 to June 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the United States (+1.1%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced mixed trend patterns.
Lentil Price in Italy (FOB) - 2023
The average lentil export price stood at $2,123 per ton in June 2023, growing by 7% against the previous month. Overall, the export price saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in April 2023 when the average export price increased by 22% against the previous month. The export price peaked in June 2023.
Prices varied noticeably by the country of destination: the country with the highest price was Switzerland ($3,009 per ton), while the average price for exports to Portugal ($1,405 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From June 2022 to June 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Spain (+2.7%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
Lentil Imports in Italy
In 2022, purchases abroad of lentils decreased by -9% to 47K tons, falling for the second year in a row after two years of growth. In general, total imports indicated a pronounced increase from 2019 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +4.8% over the last three-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports decreased by -24.6% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when imports increased by 53% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of 62K tons. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, lentil imports skyrocketed to $56M in 2022. Over the period under review, total imports indicated a significant expansion from 2019 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +25.8% over the last three years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +99.2% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 with an increase of 71% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure in 2022 and are likely to see steady growth in the immediate term.
