Hydrogen Price in the Netherlands (CIF) - 2022
In 2022, the average hydrogen import price amounted to $0.3 per cubic meter, falling by -10% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import price indicated a modest increase from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +1.5% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, hydrogen import price increased by +6.6% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 when the average import price increased by 60%. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $0.5 per cubic meter. From 2020 to 2022, the average import prices remained at a lower figure.
Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Belgium ($0.3 per cubic meter), while the price for Germany totaled $0.3 per cubic meter.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Belgium (+1.9%).

In 2022, the average hydrogen export price amounted to $0.4 per cubic meter, falling by -3.3% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, showed moderate growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when the average export price increased by 95% against the previous year. The export price peaked at $0.4 per cubic meter in 2021, and then dropped slightly in the following year.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Germany ($0.8 per cubic meter), while the average price for exports to Belgium ($0.3 per cubic meter) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to France (+4.0%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced mixed trend patterns.
Hydrogen Imports in the Netherlands
For the fourth consecutive year, the Netherlands recorded growth in supplies from abroad of hydrogen, which increased by 210% to 489M cubic meters in 2022. In general, imports continue to indicate significant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 405% against the previous year. Imports peaked in 2022 and are likely to see gradual growth in the near future.
In value terms, hydrogen imports surged to $145M in 2022. Overall, imports enjoyed a significant increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 499% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

Hydrogen Exports in the Netherlands
In 2022, overseas shipments of hydrogen were finally on the rise to reach 153M cubic meters after two years of decline. In general, exports, however, saw a dramatic downturn. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at 455M cubic meters in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, hydrogen exports surged to $63M in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, showed a noticeable slump. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at $66M in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
