Hydrogen Price in Costa Rica (CIF) - 2022
The average hydrogen import price stood at $0.3 per cubic meter in 2022, growing by 14% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price showed prominent growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 an increase of 153% against the previous year. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $0.3 per cubic meter. From 2017 to 2022, the average import prices remained at a lower figure.
Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the highest price was recorded for prices from Guatemala ($0.3 per cubic meter) and Germany ($0.3 per cubic meter), while the price for the United States ($0.2 per cubic meter) and Mexico ($0.3 per cubic meter) were amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Guatemala (+6.7%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
Hydrogen Price in Costa Rica (FOB) - 2022
In 2022, the average hydrogen export price amounted to $0.5 per cubic meter, picking up by 124% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, recorded a deep contraction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 an increase of 158% against the previous year. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $2.2 per cubic meter. From 2019 to 2022, the average export prices remained at a lower figure.
As there is only one major export destination, the average price level is determined by prices for Panama.
From 2012 to 2022, the rate of growth in terms of prices for the United States amounted to +1.2% per year.
Hydrogen Imports in Costa Rica
For the third year in a row, Costa Rica recorded decline in overseas purchases of hydrogen, which decreased by -84.7% to 20K cubic meters in 2022. In general, imports showed a precipitous contraction. The smallest decline of -5.6% was in 2020. Imports peaked at 149K cubic meters in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, hydrogen imports fell markedly to $5.1K in 2022. Over the period under review, imports showed a dramatic decrease. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 29%. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at $29K in 2021, and then fell rapidly in the following year.

Hydrogen Exports in Costa Rica
In 2022, after two years of decline, there was significant decline in shipments abroad of hydrogen, when their volume decreased by -77.6% to 1.6K cubic meters. In general, exports continue to indicate a dramatic setback. The exports peaked at 7.1K cubic meters in 2021, and then reduced remarkably in the following year.
In value terms, hydrogen exports fell significantly to $850 in 2022. Over the period under review, exports continue to indicate a precipitous setback. The exports peaked at $3.4K in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
