Imports

In 2022, the amount of high-tenacity filament yarn of polyesters imported worldwide fell to 922K tons, waning by -4.7% on the previous year. Over the period under review, total imports indicated notable growth from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +4.9% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +23.8% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 30%. As a result, imports attained the peak of 967K tons, and then reduced in the following year.

In value terms, high-tenacity filament polyester yarn imports amounted to $2B in 2022. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +2.6% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when imports increased by 44% against the previous year. Over the period under review, global imports reached the maximum in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.

Imports By Country

In 2022, the United States (148K tons), distantly followed by India (54K tons), South Korea (54K tons), Germany (48K tons) and Turkey (48K tons) were the key importers of high-tenacity filament yarn of polyesters, together mixing up 38% of total imports. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +2.4% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 42%. Over the period under review, the global exports hit record highs in 2022 and are likely to continue growth in years to come.

Exports By Country

In 2022, China (523K tons) was the largest exporter of high-tenacity filament yarn of polyesters, achieving 58% of total exports. Vietnam (103K tons) took the second position in the ranking, followed by Taiwan (Chinese) (43K tons). All these countries together took near 16% share of total exports. South Korea (33K tons), France (28K tons), Indonesia (25K tons), Germany (25K tons), Spain (17K tons) and the Netherlands (16K tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Exports from China increased at an average annual rate of +7.4% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Vietnam (+48.7%), Indonesia (+21.5%), Spain (+8.1%) and the Netherlands (+3.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Vietnam emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in the world, with a CAGR of +48.7% from 2012-2022. Taiwan (Chinese) and France experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Germany (-5.8%) and South Korea (-7.3%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. China (+12 p.p.), Vietnam (+11 p.p.) and Indonesia (+2.2 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the global exports, while France, Taiwan (Chinese), Germany and South Korea saw its share reduced by -2.1%, -3.1%, -5.4% and -8.9% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, China ($867M) remains the largest high-tenacity filament polyester yarn supplier worldwide, comprising 46% of global exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Vietnam ($201M), with an 11% share of global exports. It was followed by Germany, with a 5.5% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in China stood at +4.5%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Vietnam (+44.5% per year) and Germany (-4.9% per year).

Export Prices By Country

In 2022, the average high-tenacity filament polyester yarn export price amounted to $2,061 per ton, with an increase of 13% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, showed a noticeable curtailment. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when the average export price increased by 15%. The global export price peaked at $2,634 per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Germany ($4,013 per ton), while China ($1,658 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
